Stability AI Raises $76 Million Series B From Entertainment Backers

Stability AI raised $76 million in Series B funding, the company said on 25 August 2026. The haul takes total funding under CEO Prem Akkaraju to $232 million and puts Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts on the cap table.

Who put $76 million into this Series B

The announcement is dated Los Angeles, 25 August 2026. Stability framed the raise as new capital for purpose-built tools aimed at professional creatives in music, gaming, and entertainment. It is a Series B, not a sale, and not a new model launch.

The entertainment names are the story. Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts joined alongside AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures. Stability said EA, Universal, and Warner were already strategic partners, and that those three also invested in this round. WPP has been a strategic partner and investor throughout the Akkaraju period.

Returning checks came from Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, Sean Parker, and Eric Schmidt, each investing for a second consecutive round. Stability also listed a longer historic roster, including James Cameron and Lightspeed. Do not treat that historic list as the Series B syndicate.

Coatue co-founder Thomas Laffont joined the board. Stability said he sits with James Cameron, Sean Parker, Greycroft co-founder Dana Settle, and Akkaraju. Laffont's quote was that others are building generalized AI while Stability is building creative tools with artists, studios, and rights holders.

Akkaraju called the group "an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller." He also said Stability is "creative people making tools for creatives," and that the investors bring expertise, credibility, and a direct connection to artists, not only capital.

TechCrunch called the roster unusual: less a typical venture lineup, more the companies Stability now depends on for content licensing and distribution. That is the right reading. These are not anonymous growth funds. They are the catalogs.

If you already watch Hugging Face explore a $13 billion sale, keep the two stories apart. Hugging Face is a hub with a rumored bid and no signed buyer. Stability is a generative-media company that just closed a $76 million round. One is an approach. The other is cash in the bank.

What the money is supposed to build

Stability said the $76 million will fund three lines: the creative-production product suite, a deeper applied-research discipline, and a larger professional-services arm. TechCrunch noted the company already offers models for AI music, video, and image generation.

The official post placed the raise on the heels of Stable Audio 3.0, a family of open-weight music models trained on fully licensed data. Artists can use it through a new digital-audio-workstation plugin or on StableAudio.com. That is a product already shipping, not a promise attached to the new cash.

The partnership trail matters more than a new logo. Stability, founded in 2019, spent the past year signing entertainment companies into the workflow rather than only licensing output. TechCrunch said it struck partnerships with Universal Music and EA last October and with Warner Music last November, each giving those companies a hand in co-developing tools.

Akkaraju joined in June 2024. The $232 million total is not lifetime-everything from 2019. Stability said it is the total under his leadership, inclusive of two equity rounds and convertible notes. Use that definition. Do not compare it blindly to earlier Emad Mostaque-era totals unless a filing shows the join.

Professional services are the quieter third bucket. The announcement does not size that arm.

This is also not a chip story. If your finance owner is already pricing Nvidia's 15% AI server hikes for 2027, keep rack cost on its own line. Stability's raise is about creative tools and rights-holder equity.

Court cases the raise does not close

TechCrunch put two legal threads next to the celebration. Stability largely prevailed in a UK copyright lawsuit from Getty Images over training images. A similar Getty case in the United States is still moving. Those are different dockets. A UK win is not a US close.

Separately, co-founder Cyrus Hodes sued in 2023, saying the other co-founder, Emad Mostaque, tricked him into selling his share. That suit is about ownership history, not Getty's photos. Do not merge them.

The raise also does not, by itself, settle how training data will be licensed in every territory. The point of putting Universal, Sony, Warner, and EA on the cap table is that those firms now have equity next to the co-development deals. Equity is not a global copyright license. Pin both facts.

Open-source history still sits in the background. Stable Diffusion made the company famous. The 2026 pitch is professional creatives, licensed music models, and services. Both can be true. The Series B is funding the second pitch.

Do not write a valuation. Neither TechCrunch nor Stability published a post-money number in the materials we used. $76 million is the cash. $232 million is the Akkaraju-era total. Those are the only two money figures that belong in the changelog.

What to pin if you already generate images, audio, or video

Put the syndicate and the use-of-proceeds in the wrapper. A skill prompt that only says "Stability got funded" is the line this round is meant to replace.

The skill should say: Stability AI announced a $76 million Series B on 25 August 2026; total funding under Prem Akkaraju is $232 million including two equity rounds and convertible notes since June 2024; new or participating entertainment backers include Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts; AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also joined; returning checks include Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, Sean Parker, and Eric Schmidt; Thomas Laffont joined the board; proceeds go to creative-production products, applied research, and professional services; Stable Audio 3.0 is already out on licensed data; Getty UK largely won by Stability, Getty US still open; Hodes v. Mostaque ownership suit dates to 2023.

If your team uses Stability models in a production pipeline, the operational change is the cap table, not a new sampler. Ask whether your license and your service contract still match a company that is now partly owned by the labels and a games publisher. That question is the useful one. A generic "AI music is safer now" sentence is not.

Do not treat the raise as a court victory or as a model card. It is a funding event with named entertainment backers and a $232 million running total under the current CEO.
