TikTok Adds AI Shopping Assistant and One-Click Buy Direct

TikTok on Monday, 5 October 2026, announced Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that helps users find and buy products, and Buy Direct, a checkout that lets them purchase from a brand with one click from the For You feed without leaving the app. Adweek reported that both features are beginning to roll out to users and brands in the US.

The announcements came in a TikTok newsroom post tied to Advertising Week New York 2026, which also introduced an AI lead-generation agent, a US launch of the TikTok Ad Network and wider availability of TikTok's Model Context Protocol connector for advertisers.

How TikTok Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct work

TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as an agent that understands context, remembers what a user needs and finds matching products faster. It is built into several TikTok touchpoints and offers real-time guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing within a single conversation, according to the company.

Buy Direct handles the transaction. TikTok says it is an in-app checkout that lets users buy directly from a brand, cutting the purchase journey to a single click from the For You feed. Adweek reported that this checkout sits separately from TikTok Shop, the company's in-house marketplace.

TikTok says it is building both experiences with commerce platforms and payment providers including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. The company groups them under what it calls Agentic Commerce shopping experiences, and says Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant are where those experiences start.

"We're trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action, and there's a lot that we can do to bring AI to that journey," David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization and product partnerships, told reporters at the company's New York office on Monday, according to Adweek.

Why TikTok is widening shopping beyond TikTok Shop

TechCrunch said the features broaden TikTok's commerce approach beyond TikTok Shop by building shopping tools into the wider app, including the For You feed. It added that an in-app assistant could help TikTok keep users on the platform when they have product questions, instead of turning to outside AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. TechCrunch also said that pairing an assistant with direct payments could let TikTok capture more of each shopping journey, and potentially more transaction value, because users can get answers about a product and pay for it on the spot.

TikTok backed the launch with figures on its commerce reach. Its newsroom post points to an economic impact report from PF Global, released the previous week, which found that activity on TikTok helped generate $81 billion in GDP for US businesses and that 54 million Americans bought a product after watching a TikTok video. TechCrunch cited an eMarketer estimate that TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all US social commerce, and noted that TikTok Shop launched in the US in September 2023.

TikTok also cited Kantar's Media Reactions 2026 report, which it says ranked TikTok as the top platform where marketers plan to increase ad spending in 2027, with 84% of marketers placing advertising on TikTok.

The AI tools TikTok added for advertisers

The shopping launch arrived with a set of AI features aimed at brands. "AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled," Kaufman said in the newsroom post. Agentic Leads is an AI agent for lead generation that holds guided conversations to capture and qualify prospects, and TikTok says it will appear in TikTok direct messages and in lead forms on advertisers' own websites. The TikTok Ad Network is now open to US advertisers, extending campaigns to nearly 400,000 apps worldwide from inside TikTok Ads Manager.

TikTok also said its TikTok for Business MCP, built on the open Model Context Protocol, is now available as a connector across AI platforms and registries including Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. The company says the number of advertisers using the MCP for campaign activation and management has grown by more than 200% since launch, citing its internal data for July to September 2026.

Other updates extend automation. Search Ads Campaign, powered by Smart+, automates search ads across keywords and creative, while Smart+ Creative Selection brings advertisers' own assets, Symphony's AI-generated creatives and creator content into one approval workflow. TikTok said GMV Max, its automated ad tool for TikTok Shop sellers, will factor in costs such as affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees so advertisers can optimize for return on investment.

What shoppers and brands should watch next

TikTok's post did not give a date for when every US user will see Shopping Assistant or Buy Direct, and it did not name the first brands taking part. Adweek described the rollout as beginning in the US, and the company's post lists the partner platforms but not pricing or fees for merchants.

Other platforms are also adding purchase features to AI assistants. PromptCrates has covered how Meta's Muse agent can shop and check out for users, how ChatGPT added global virtual try-on and shopping favorites and how Google tested a Flipkart buy button inside Gemini in India. TikTok's pitch to brands is that its assistant can answer questions about sizing, shipping and availability inside the app, and that Buy Direct can then complete the sale from the feed.
