How to Run a Three-Pass Image Revision Loop
A three-pass image revision loop for Midjourney and Flux. Freeze the subject, revise atmosphere only, then technical only. Not a recap of prompt layers. A stop rule so you stop remixing forever.
Anyone iterating in Midjourney or Flux can finish an image revision loop in three passes: freeze the subject, change only atmosphere, then change only technical. Do it on the next render, not after you have twelve near-misses and no memory of what you liked.
This is not how to write the first prompt. The first prompt has layers. The revision has a freeze. If you need the first-prompt shape, use the three-layer image prompt structure and come back. Mixing first-prompt advice into a revision is how you rebuild the person every time you ask for "warmer light."
The image revision loop, three passes only
1. Freeze the subject, on paper
Subject means who or what is in the frame, the count, the wardrobe, the pose, the camera distance. Not the mood. Not the lens kit.
Copy that block into a note you will not edit for the rest of the loop. Example freeze:
"One woman, mid-30s, shaved sides, red wool coat buttoned, standing, three-quarter view, looking left, waist-up, held still."
That paragraph is now sacred. Every later prompt starts with it, verbatim.
In Midjourney, pin the seed or remix from the exact image you are revising. In Flux, attach that image as the reference and keep the freeze text identical. If the freeze text drifts by an adjective, you started a new subject.
2. Pass one: confirm the freeze
Generate. You are not art-directing yet. You are asking: is this the same person or object?
Pass-one checklist:
- Count matches.
- Wardrobe matches.
- Pose matches.
- Crop matches.
If any of those fail, you do not proceed to atmosphere. You rerun pass one. This rerun does not count as pass two. It is still the freeze.
3. Pass two: atmosphere only
Atmosphere is weather, time of day, light quality as mood, palette, and the air in the room. Fog. Sodium streetlight. Overcast. A red practical. Not "85mm." Not "skin pores."
Keep the freeze paragraph untouched at the top. Under it, add one atmosphere instruction. One.
"Atmosphere only: overcast noon, wet asphalt, no new props, no wardrobe change."
Send that to Midjourney or Flux. If a new prop appears, you did not freeze hard enough. Reject the image. Do not "take the good parts." There are no good parts in a broken freeze. There is only a new picture.
If you need help keeping axes from bleeding, segment the prompt so each pass is a block. Subject block. Atmosphere block. Technical block. Edit one block per pass.
4. Pass three: technical only
Technical is lens, aperture feel, grain, sharpness, color pipeline, framing micro-adjustments that do not change pose. It is the last mile, not a new shoot.
Keep freeze and atmosphere verbatim. Add one technical line:
"Technical only: 50mm look, mild grain, no crop change, no new light sources."
"No new light sources" matters. A rim light is atmosphere sneaking back in. If you wanted a rim, that was pass two. You missed it. You do not get a bonus pass.
Flux will try to "improve realism" and restyle the face. Repeat the freeze. Midjourney will try to beautify. Repeat the freeze. Beautify is a subject change wearing a technical hat.
5. Stop at three. Export. Do not tinker.
You now have a freeze, an atmosphere decision, and a technical decision. That is a finished revision loop.
What you do not do:
- A fourth pass for "just the hands."
- A model swap to "see what Flux does with this Midjourney face."
- A palette tweak that is actually a new time of day.
If the hands are wrong, the freeze was wrong. Start a new loop.
