How to Turn a Long Slack DM Into a Three-Bullet Ask

Anyone staring at a rambling Slack draft can collapse it into a three-bullet ask in 8 minutes: the ask, the why, and the by-when. Run it in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini before a warm paragraph trains the other person to thumbs-up with no date.

A three-bullet ask is a request with a clock, not a status dump. Three lines tell one person what you need, why it is real, and when it is due.

This is not turning a Slack thread into a meeting agenda. An agenda books chairs. This skill sends one request. If the work already happened on a call, write the five-line meeting recap email instead. Do not paste a recap into a DM.

Save the three-bullet shape as a skill prompt you can rerun. If the thread is already hot, write the difficult email reply first, then shrink what remains. Do not mix apology and request.

Write a three-bullet ask before you send

1. Paste the ramble. Name the ask first

Instruct ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini: "Do not draft a DM yet. Write one line: I need [verb plus object] from [named person]. If I did not name an ask, write UNKNOWN and stop. No hello. No circling back. No just wanted to."

Paste the draft, not the whole channel. A model that invents a request is lying on your behalf.

Banned: just wanted to, circling back, looping you in, no rush, whenever, thoughts?, FYI, as discussed, bumping this.

2. One why that is a fact, not a vibe

Send the ask line back. Instruct: "Line two is why this ask exists, in one sentence, with a fact I pasted. Not because it would be great. Not alignment. If I named no why, write UNKNOWN."

Good: "Why: the invoice file is due to finance Thursday." Bad: "Why: would love your thoughts when you have a sec." Thoughts is not a why. A sec is not a clock.

3. One by-when with a weekday and a date

Instruct: "Line three is a by-when: weekday, date, and time if the work crosses time zones. Not EOD. Not soon. If I named no date, write UNKNOWN. Do not invent a deadline from my anxiety."

Good: "By-when: Wednesday 26 Aug, 16:00 WIB." Bad: "Whenever you can this week." This week is a mood.

If they have not agreed to the date, you are proposing, not assigning. Say "Can you do this by." Do not pretend they already said yes.

4. Force three bullets, then stop the model

Now ask for the draft. Hard cap: three bullets. No greeting. No sign-off.

Tell the model: "Output exactly three bullets labeled Ask, Why, By-when. If a banned phrase appears, rewrite. Do not add a fourth bullet. Do not add Hope you're well."

ChatGPT will add a warm hello. Claude will hedge into "it might help if." Gemini will turn the date into "this week." Cut all three.

If a fourth bullet appears, you have the ramble again. Delete it.

5. One human pass as the recipient

Read the three bullets as if you have to act today and did not write the novel above them.

Check three traps:

• An ask that is actually a status update. "Flagging this" is not an ask. "Please approve the PDF" is.
• A why that is a feeling.
• A by-when that does not exist on a calendar.

Fix those in your own words. Then send the edited three back: "Replace only the words I changed. Do not re-expand."

One pass. A second pass is how three bullets grow a paragraph. Paste them. Hit send. If a paragraph still sits above the bullets, you never collapsed it. Stop.
