How to Turn Leftovers into a Recipe Card with AI

Anyone staring at a fridge can turn leftovers into a recipe card with AI in 15 minutes: inventory what is there, name one dish, force a card, then one pass. Run it in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini before you accept a stir-fry that needs four sauces you do not own.

Turn leftovers into a recipe card in five steps

1. Inventory only what you have

Write the list like a warehouse.

• Cooked leftovers, with an honest age. "Roast chicken, two thighs, cooked Sunday."
• Raw bits you will use. "Half a yellow onion, one sad zucchini."
• Staples you can see. "Salt, rice, olive oil, eggs." Not "the usual."

Instruct ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini: "Do not suggest a dish yet. Repeat this inventory. Do not add pantry items I did not name."

2. Name one dish job

3. Force the card shape

Now ask for the card. These fields, nothing else:

• Yield — plates or people.
• Time — active minutes.

• Missing — NONE or UNKNOWN. UNKNOWN means you do not cook yet.

Tell the model: "Fill this card. If a step needs an item not on the list, write UNKNOWN and stop. Do not garnish. Keep the card under 180 words."

4. One human pass for sense and safety

Read the card out loud in the kitchen, not in the chat.

Check three traps: an invented meat temperature, a tool you do not have, a leftover older than you trust. If you have to ask the model whether the chicken is still good, you already know. The skill cannot smell.

Fix the card in your own words: "Replace these steps. Do not re-expand." One pass. A second pass turns a skillet into a method.

5. Cook, or park the UNKNOWN. Stop.

If Missing is NONE, cook. If it is soy sauce, skip, substitute a named thing you have, or stop. Do not let the model invent "any salty liquid." Do not ask for a weekly plan.
